What are the alternatives?

Many organizations will loan computer programs, videos, charts, models, and other dissection alternatives to schools at no cost:

The American Anti-Vivisection Society offers the Animalearn Science Bank, a vast resource of dissection alternatives for everything from frogs to cats to grasshoppers.

The Humane Society of the United States runs the Humane Education Loan Program (HELP), with an extensive collection of cruelty-free alternatives for every grade level, from middle school to university.

The Ethical Science & Education Coalition offers a free loan library of resources with more than 400 books, 200 videos, and dozens of models and computer programs available. They also offer a free catalog entitled Beyond Dissection, which includes listings of more than 400 humane education alternatives. Boston-area students can use ESEC’s Resource Room, open weekdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For an appointment, call 617-523-6020 or e-mail esec@ma.neavs.com.

The National Anti-Vivisection Society has developed the BioLeap Lending Library of Life Science Materials, providing students with free access to 3-D plastic models, computer software, videos, color transparencies, and other materials for a wide variety of animal species.  Call 1-800-888-NAVS for further information.

The InterNICHE Alternatives Loan System offers loans from a large selection of alternatives, which can be searched for by discipline and type of alternative. The available alternatives cover the areas of anatomy, physiology, and surgery.
